The 2009 White House Christmas ornament honors Grover Cleveland’s second term as the 24th President of the United States and is the second ornament by the White House Historical Association dedicated to him, who uniquely served two non-consecutive terms. This ornament highlights the prominence of the Christmas tree in the holiday festivities of President Cleveland’s young family. The central hologram portrays the White House’s south façade adorned by freshly fallen snow, while the warm radiance from the first Christmas tree illuminated by electric lights emanates from the second-floor Oval Room’s towering windows. This serene depiction is inspired by a contemporary watercolor painting by Margaret Huddy, a Washington, D.C.-based artist. The ornament’s reverse side reenacts a tree-trimming gathering led by President and Mrs. Cleveland for their children and those of cabinet members, with a vintage newspaper excerpt capturing the President’s joy in orchestrating Christmas for his family. An exquisitely designed gold-finished wreath made of snowflakes, tinted ice blue and white, encircles this historical piece.
