The 2013 White House Christmas ornament pays homage to Woodrow Wilson, the twenty-eighth U.S. president. Despite his terms (1913-1921) coinciding with World War I, Wilson strived for enduring peace, earning him the 1919 Nobel Peace Prize. This quest is embodied in the ornament, featuring an American Elm that Wilson planted on the White House’s North Lawn in 1913. The scene is encased in a 24-karat gold-finished frame of elm leaves, olive branches, and holly leaves encircling Wilson’s monogram. Peace doves perched on the branches bear banners reading “The White House, Christmas 2013.” The ornament’s reverse quotes Wilson’s 1917 message to Congress: “Peace must be planted upon the tested foundations of political liberty.”
